What Are Deepfakes?

Deepfakes are synthetic media generated by artificial intelligence. Using machine learning techniques, it is now possible to create highly convincing fake videos, audio recordings, and images of real people. The technology can make someone appear to say or do things they never actually said or did, with a level of realism that is increasingly difficult to distinguish from genuine footage.

While deepfake technology has legitimate applications in entertainment, education, and accessibility, it has also become a powerful tool for scammers. The barrier to creating deepfakes has dropped significantly, with freely available software capable of producing convincing results from just a few seconds of sample audio or a handful of photographs.

How Scammers Use Deepfakes

Video Call Impersonation

One of the most alarming applications of deepfake technology in fraud is real-time video call impersonation. Scammers use AI to overlay a fabricated face and voice onto their own during a live video call, making it appear as though you are speaking with someone you know and trust. This technique has been used in several high-profile cases:
